This is both a spectacular and intimidating site which can be difficult to understand without a lot of local experience. The site has much to offer, from smooth evening ridge soaring to very powerful thermals that could be used to push you on your way to long distance cross country flying.

Sofala Site Guide

Sofala is a private-land takeoff with a public landing zone, about 10km East of Sofala itself. This site has been flown very rarely by club members in the past years.

We have access to a beautiful bushland site at Blackheath that we need to look after not only for ourselves but also the pilots of the future.

Getting Back to Launch

The walking track back to launch is not clearly defined and even having done the walk back from the Landing Zone once or twice with others, it can be easy to get lost due to the numerous tracks that criss-cross the escarpment.

Welcome to the Blue Mountains Soaring Club. Founded in March 1987, the Club is committed to providing safe and regular flying opportunities throughout the Blue Mountains and Central Tablelands to the west of Sydney NSW for all of its members, from novice through advanced. Regular activities include Club competition days, novice days, towing days and heaps of social flying. We also hold occasional trips away to other well-known flying areas.
